A New Acronym is Born: NWP-as-a-Service (NWPaaS!)

Inย our personal and professional lives, weย are constantly battling the lack ofย two key resources: time and money. NHMSs around the world are noย exceptionย โ€” the prohibitively high costs ofย deploying and maintaining the on-premises HPC platforms required for running local Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Models, and the timeframes needed toย deploy and maintain such platforms even if/when budgets are obtained, are anย exercise inย meteorological frustration. Whatโ€™s more, achieving high SLAs for any NWP platform requires highly-specialized engineering capabilities often not available toย NHMSs, especially inย emerging economies. The result? Significant compromises onย the accuracy and timeliness ofย forecasts inย regions that are often particularly weather sensitive.

Enter: NWP-as-a-Service

CBAM, Tomorrow.ioโ€™s recently-launched NWP platform, provides aย new way toย look atย โ€” and solveย โ€” this problem.

CBAM, Tomorrow.ioโ€™s Bespoke Atmospheric Model, enables NHMSs toย deploy customized, country-specific Operational NWP onย the cloud. With CBAM, NHMSs can customize their own forecast models toย fulfill their missions, and provide highly accurate forecasts toย their governments and citizens. This new level ofย accuracy and reliability isย achieved onย the cloud, circumventing the costs and bureaucracy ofย deploying on-premises platforms.

CBAM can beย configured toย run atย any temporal and spatial resolution desired. When needed, itย can beย nested within the best available global orย regional models (e.g. ECMWF) and assimilate all available observations, including those deployed byย the NHMSs themselves, asย well asย private and public observation networks. CBAM also enables NHMSs toย expand their observation network byย ingesting Tomorrow.ioโ€™s proprietary observations, derived from its โ€œvirtual sensingโ€ technologies, such asย microwave signal attenuation, connected vehicles, mobile devices and more. Inย addition, Tomorrow.ioโ€™s proprietary โ€œdynamic nudgingโ€ technique eliminates the drifting ofย the forecast when running only several times per day.

CBAM isย completely customizable. Tomorrow.ioโ€™s team ofย world-leading scientists and engineers works with NHMSs toย design the ultimate configuration for eachย โ€” geographical domain, forecasting horizon, temporal and spatial resolution, weather parameters ofย interestย โ€” and allows for quick iterations without paying for unnecessary compute power orย being constrained byย local hardware capabilities.

With the paradigm shift toย aย cloud-based NWP platform, meteorological services can change their own focus: Rather than seeking CapEx budgets, which are hard toย comeย by, allocating manpower over several years, and locking the organization into aย single type ofย deployment for multiple years, NWP-as-a-Services isย anย OpEx expenditure, and benefits from the rapid deployment and ongoing upgrades and updates made possible byย the cloud. Asย aย result, NHMSs are freed toย doย their actual job: providing better weather forecasting for their communities. With NWP-as-a-Service, NHMSs are able toย not only maximize those scarce resourcesย โ€” time and moneyย โ€” but toย doย soย while getting cutting-edge technologies that are typically not available toย the public sector.

Itโ€™s the rare win-win: technology that reduces costs, vastly improves performance, and frees specialists toย doย what they doย best, with huge ramifications for the safety, financial success, and well being ofย the regions that are dependent onย their forecasts.
