Politico: Tomorrow.io to Support Raytheon Intelligence & Space’s EPIC Weather Modeling Initiative for NOAA

Tomorrow.io to contribute novel weather modeling technology

Boston, 2021 – Tomorrow.io, the world’s only Weather Intelligence Platform™ today announced that it is part of the Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a Raytheon Technologies business, team awarded a contract for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) program. NOAA announced that RI&S was chosen to design and develop EPIC, an extramural center that will unite academia, industry and government to create the most user-accessible and comprehensive Earth modeling system.

“Weather forecasting capabilities in the U.S. must keep up to accurately assess changes in climate over time,” said Rei Goffer, CSO and Co-founder of Tomorrow.io. “In 2020, for example, we experienced a record number of hurricanes, and new precedents for volatile weather and air quality events. Climate adaptation is the next major frontier for governments, businesses, and individuals, and we are thrilled to be working with NOAA and Raytheon to help design the future of weather forecasting capabilities.”

Tomorrow.io’s proprietary Weather Intelligence Platform enables complex event processing and application at scale. Earlier this year, the company announced that it is in the process of designing and launching its own radar-equipped satellites to improve weather forecasting for the entire planet. The company’s unique 1 Forecast (1F) technology aggregates real-time data from existing models including those from NOAA and ECMWF, proprietary numerical weather prediction models, and will incorporate data from the new constellation.

“Improving environmental modeling can help save lives, protect property and strengthen the nation’s economy,” said David Appel, vice president of C2 Digital Solutions at RI&S. “Our solution will use Tomorrow.io’s commercial environmental modeling to help prioritize and accelerate the best models developed to put into operation through EPIC.”

EPIC will make it easier for developers across diverse sectors to contribute to the development of operational models using a common modeling infrastructure.
