BMKG and Tomorrow.io Sign MoU and Cooperation Agreement to Develop an AI-Based Meteorological Prediction System

This article originally appeared in CNBC Indonesia on February 4, 2025.

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) plans to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to predict weather conditions throughout the country. This plan is marked by the intent to conduct a feasibility study to improve accuracy and strengthen BMKG’s service systems through strategic collaboration in the Jakarta and West Java regions.

The study will be carried out in cooperation with Tomorrow Indonesia. BMKG and Tomorrow Indonesia have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding meteorological cooperation and a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for the study.

“This is about how we develop an AI-based prediction system, which in the future will be able to improve the accuracy of information, particularly in meteorology for public weather, maritime weather, and aviation,” said BMKG’s Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramdhani, in an official statement on Tuesday (2/4/2025).

“The collaboration covers several important aspects such as the development of an AI-based prediction system, scientific and technical collaboration in meteorology, human resource capacity-building, as well as the provision of meteorological data and supporting technology. This signing is a strategic step in delivering meteorological information services that are fast, precise, accurate, broad-reaching, and easy to understand across various sectors,” he explained.

Andri noted that providing specialized weather services on land and at sea for the benefit of Indonesia requires reliable infrastructure, competent human resources, and continuous technological innovation. Therefore, he said, collaborating with Tomorrow Indonesia is a strategic step to enhance meteorological services in Indonesia.

Moreover, according to Andri, this partnership supports the national development vision expressed in the “Asta Cita” (Eight Aspirations) and aligns with the “Indonesia Emas 2045” (Golden Indonesia 2045) vision. Specifically, he added, BMKG’s role supports sustainable development, climate change mitigation, and disaster risk management. Within the Asta Cita’s 8th aspiration, there is an emphasis on harmony between humans, the environment, and culture.

“Through this collaboration, it is hoped that innovative solutions will emerge for more effective meteorological data and services, as well as increased efficiency in operational aspects throughout Indonesia. This is in line with the mandate of Law No. 31 of 2009 on Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics, which governs BMKG’s duties and functions in providing high-quality information services to the public,” he said.

“BMKG plays a crucial role in disaster management through the development of early warning systems, improved inter-agency coordination, and collaboration with the private sector and the community to achieve more effective disaster response,” Andri added.
