Tomorrow.io Satellite Data Enters NOAA’s AWIPS2 System for Testing Under NESDIS Commercial Weather Data Pilot

BOSTON, MA — December 10, 2025 — Tomorrow.io, the world’s leading Resilience Platform™, today announced a significant milestone in the ongoing NOAA evaluation of commercial space-based weather data. Tomorrow.io’s proprietary microwave sounder satellite data is now ingested and displayed within NOAA’s Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS2), the same system used by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) for operational forecasting.

This pilot integration, supported by evaluation and display work from the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) and NOAA’s Total Operational Weather Readiness – Satellites (TOWR-S) team, marks one of the early instances of commercial microwave sounder data being assessed in NOAA’s AWIPS2 environment for potential future operational use.

As part of the testing phase of this Pilot program, Tomorrow.io’s global microwave sounder data is now available to NOAA forecasters in the same interface they use to monitor and predict tropical cyclone activity, alongside datasets such as NASA’s TROPICS mission. The goal of this evaluation is to explore how commercial observations can enhance insight into storm formation, structure, and intensification by providing detailed and timely cross-sections of atmospheric moisture and thermal profiles.

CIRA, working with NOAA’s Total Operational Weather Readiness – Satellites (TOWR-S) program, has developed AWIPS2-ready microwave imagery products using Tomorrow.io’s satellite data at frequencies including 91, 183, and 204 GHz. These channels provide critical insight into atmospheric moisture and thermal structure: key variables for monitoring storm development and intensification. Data streams from Tomorrow.io are being delivered in near–real time to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) for testing and validation as part of NOAA’s broader effort to assess the utility of commercial weather data through the NESDIS Commercial Weather Data Pilot Program.

“This marks a major step forward in bringing commercial innovation into operational forecasting environments,” said Rei Goffer, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Tomorrow.io. “It’s an early but exciting validation that our space-based observations can integrate seamlessly into NOAA’s systems, paving the way for future operational use.”
