3-month expansion of satellite data delivery underscores success of the Commercial Data Program (CDP)
BOSTON, May 28, 2025 — Tomorrow.io, the world’s leading Resilience Platform™, today announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded the company a contract extension to its Microwave Sounder Pilot Study, a program testing the use of space-based instruments to improve forecasting. The three-month extension – timed to cover the peak of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season – will provide NOAA with critical, high-frequency satellite observations that support its forecasting capabilities, offering valuable insights as the agency evaluates commercial data for potential future operational use.
The extension builds on Tomorrow.io’s partnership with NOAA and reinforces the agency’s confidence in leveraging innovative commercial satellite capabilities. Tomorrow.io operates the world’s first commercial satellite constellation, delivering unprecedented access to global atmospheric data. These satellites measure temperature, humidity, and precipitation – data that is especially critical over oceans and other data-sparse regions – making them essential for hurricane forecasting when every minute matters.
As extreme weather becomes increasingly common, the U.S. faces not only more frequent hurricanes but also more volatile storms, with rapid intensification making preparedness more difficult. By delivering enhanced operational data, Tomorrow.io is equipping NOAA to meet these challenges head-on – improving forecast accuracy, enabling faster decision-making, and strengthening resilience when and where it’s needed most.
“This extension reflects a growing recognition that public-private collaboration is critical to national resilience,” said Rei Goffer, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Tomorrow.io. “We’re proud to support NOAA’s mission with our advanced satellite technology – helping communities stay ahead of severe weather and adapt to a more volatile conditions.”
The award falls under NOAA’s Commercial Data Program (CDP), an initiative designed to evaluate and integrate commercially sourced weather data into federal operations. Tomorrow.io’s success in the program highlights how commercial providers add speed, innovation, and value to the evolving national weather infrastructure.
