Forecast: Tropical Cyclone Expected to Hit Gulf Coast Friday

A tropical or subtropical storm is forecast to form over the Gulf of Mexico on Friday. Meteorologists predict this system will evolve into Tropical Storm Claudette, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding, and gusty winds.

Initial rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit Friday morning over the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans. Heavier rain and storms will build in the evening as the storm approaches the Louisana coast. Rain is expected in the southern half of Mississippi and Alabama overnight into Saturday morning, then will make its way into Georgia throughout the day on Saturday.

The Mississippi River delta across coastal portions of Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle could get 5-9” rainfall. Other parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana could get 3-6” rainfall.
