Tomorrow.io Unveils Breakthrough Severe Weather Model Delivering Kilometer-Scale Hail and Lightning Forecasts Every 15 Minutes

BOSTON, MA — October 14, 2025 — Tomorrow.io, the world’s leading Resilience Platform™, today announced the release of FOCUS Severe Weather, a new machine-learning model built to provide earlier, high-resolution forecasts of two of the most damaging and disruptive weather phenomena – hail and lightning. With 15-minute updates out to 6 hours and hourly forecasts through 36 hours at ~3-km resolution, FOCUS Severe Weather sets a new benchmark in severe weather prediction, turning advanced science into actionable lead time for governments, insurers, transportation networks, and energy operators.

Powered by Tomorrow.io’s FOCUS Framework, the model combines industry-standard forecast inputs with real-time radar and satellite data  to generate frequent, probabilistic predictions that capture the uncertainty and rapid evolution of severe storms. Unlike traditional severe-weather models that refresh only a few times per day, FOCUS Severe Weather delivers sub-hourly updates with an ensemble-based architecture that outputs clear, usable probabilities (e.g., hail >0.5″) so teams can align actions with their own risk thresholds and minimize alert fatigue.

“Severe weather isn’t a headline – it’s a safety decision every minute,” said Shimon Elkabetz, Co-founder & CEO of Tomorrow.io. “FOCUS Severe Weather gives our customers the critical lead time they need to protect people first – whether that means evacuating outdoor venues, grounding flights, or sheltering crews – while also minimizing disruption and loss.”

“Traditional models struggle to keep pace with the speed and volatility of severe weather,” said Arun Chawla, Chief Weather Officer at Tomorrow.io. “FOCUS Severe Weather changes that equation by combining rapid refreshes, ensemble uncertainty, and neighborhood-aware processing to pinpoint not just where storms may strike, but how likely and when. This is what turning cutting-edge science into practical resilience looks like.”

FOCUS Severe Weather is now available within Tomorrow.io’s NextGen platform. Learn more at https://www.tomorrow.io/nextgen/.
