Breakthrough sets a new standard in weather AI, redefining forecasting accuracy and cost-efficiency across the industry
BOSTON, July, 29, 2025 —Tomorrow.io, the world’s leading Resilience Platform™, today announced that its commercially developed microwave sounder data has demonstrated operationally relevant performance in global forecast modeling. The results – presented at the recent ITSC-25 conference – stem from rigorous Observing System Experiments (OSEs) using NOAA’s Unified Forecast System (UFS) and the JEDI assimilation system, which showed statistically significant improvements in 6-hour humidity and temperature forecasts. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology noted the data meets key scientific requirements and shows strong potential for operational use.
“We are very happy to see that Tomorrow.io is taking the user requirements seriously for well-calibrated measurements that demonstrate stability within both short and long time scales. Results presented at ITSC-25 indicate that Tomorrow.io satellites are already providing observations that could be very beneficial for moisture analysis in an NWP context,” said Fiona Smith, Co-Chair of ITWG.
This milestone marks a breakthrough in the role of commercial providers within the global weather ecosystem. Historically, only government agencies have delivered microwave sounding data of sufficient quality for operational use. Tomorrow.io’s achievement shows that a private company can now meet those scientific standards – paving the way for faster, more cost-effective, and scalable improvements to global forecasting systems.
Results shown at ITSC-25 illustrate that Tomorrow.io’s TMS satellites (maroon line) can deliver 6-hour forecast impacts comparable to leading microwave sounders on NOAA and EUMETSAT satellites on a per-instrument basis — at dramatically lower cost.
“Accurate and timely forecasting has historically required substantial financial resources, limiting global access,” said Rei Goffer, CSO and Co-founder of Tomorrow.io. “Our TMS satellites prove that a commercial provider can meet the scientific bar for operational impact – opening the door to faster, more affordable, and more accessible global forecasting.”
Tomorrow.io continues to expand its constellation and is deepening collaborations with leading global organizations – including NOAA, EUMETSAT, ECMWF, and WMO – to integrate TMS data into global forecasting pipelines and operational weather modeling systems.
