New initiative creates direct pathway for developers worldwide to build, compete, and deploy weather models that power critical operational decisions
BOSTON, MA — June 10, 2025 – Tomorrow.io, the world’s leading Resilience Platform™, today announced Build Tomorrow, a revolutionary challenge-based community that transforms how weather AI models move from research to solving real world problems, at scale. The initiative invites universities, research institutions, and individual developers and data scientists worldwide to compete in solving real forecasting challenges – with winning solutions awarded cash prizes and having the potential to be deployed directly to governments, enterprises, and critical infrastructure operators through Tomorrow.io’s global platform.
Build Tomorrow establishes a new paradigm for weather innovation – one that connects cutting-edge AI development with real-world operational needs. Challenges will range from predicting typhoon impacts on supply chains to improving renewable energy forecasts, spanning both global-scale problems and hyper-local priorities. Powered by challenges faced by Tomorrow.io’s global network of industry partners, the initiative ensures that every solution is grounded in impact from the start.
“We’re creating the first direct bridge between new observational data, AI innovation in modeling, and operational weather decisions,” said Shimon Elkabetz, CEO and Co-Founder of Tomorrow.io. “Whether you’re a PhD student in Mumbai, a developer in São Paulo, or a research team in Oslo – if you can build a model that creates real value, we’ll provide you with the most comprehensive global observations and data sets for training and inference, and make sure it is put it in the hands of decision-makers who need it most. This is about democratizing both the development and deployment of weather intelligence.”
Unlike traditional modeling efforts that prioritize theoretical accuracy, Build Tomorrow evaluates models on their ability to drive better decisions. Each competition centers on specific, real-world scenarios sourced from sectors like energy, agriculture, and disaster management. Open to all technical contributors, the program offers exclusive satellite data and real-world challenges, with winning models deployed through Tomorrow.io’s Resilience Platform™. New challenges launch monthly.
“What excites me most about Build Tomorrow is how it creates an ecosystem where builders, data providers, and operational decision-makers converge around solving real problems. We’re not just launching a few competitions – we’re opening the entire value chain of weather intelligence; where every participant plays a role in building a more weather-ready world.” said Cole Swain, SVP of Strategic Partnerships.
The first Build Tomorrow challenge launches next month, focusing on a critical forecasting gap that affects billions in economic activity annually. Subsequent challenges will address regional risks, sector-specific needs, and emerging weather patterns, with input from Tomorrow.io’s extensive network of operational partners and datasets.
“This isn’t just about better models – it’s about a global community solving real challenges with innovation at the speed of need,” added Elkabetz. “Every challenge solved, every model deployed, directly translates to better decisions that protect lives and livelihoods.”
